HDD Caddy is a special casing for a hard drive or SSD. HDD Caddy is built from aluminium. Within the casing there is a plastic frame where you can mount a single 2.5-inch hard drive or SSD. Then inside this frame there is an adapter that connects the hard drive or SSD with the connector inside your laptop.
HDD Caddy has the same dimensions of your optical drive thus allowing you to fully insert it inside the laptop. On the outside you wouldn't notice the difference between a laptop with a HDD Caddy and a laptop without a HDD Caddy. This makes it great to keep your laptop mobile and make external USB stick or external hard drives redundant.
Once HDD Caddy is installed in your laptop you'll have access to the drive that is mounted in the HDD Caddy. For example you can install a 500GB hard drive inside the HDD Caddy and you'll have your notebook storage capacity extended with 500GB. The second hard drive in the HDD Caddy that is now inside your laptop will be, for instance in Windows, immediately recognized as a second storage disk. You can use the second storage disk to store your files, music, movies, programs, and games. In most laptops you can set up the second hard drive to boot a second operating system. For instance if you want to use Linux besides your Windows installation.
Installing HDD Caddy is not difficult for most laptops and also doesn't take a lot time. In most cases it is 2 minutes work. Check the example video below for the HP ProBook 4540s.
When do you might need a HDD Caddy? If you have upgraded your laptop with a SSD (Solid State Drive) you might feel limited by the storage capacity of most SSD's. Although you can buy a bigger SSD, the problem with SSD is that they are relatively expensive in terms GB/price. Also if you have upgraded your laptop with a SSD the chances are high that you still have the old hard drive laying around somewhere. HDD Caddy is therefore a very economical solution as well.
When installing a HDD Caddy inside your laptop you have to sacrifice your optical drive. But in most cases that shouldn't be a problem. Nowadays CD's and DVD's are obsolete and with the populairity of streaming video like Netflix you might also need the blu-rday anymore. Stil if you need your optical drive once in a while you can easily still use it by a SATA-to-USB adapter that transforms your optical drive to an easy to use USB plug and play device.
